How to Write a Summary for a Janitor

  1. Mention your previous experience. Did you work as a TA for a class during your college experience? Were you a peer tutor? 
  2. Describe your greatest strength. Are you patient? Do you love sharing knowledge?

Senior Level Work Experience as a Janitor

  • Picked up litter within the schools and on school grounds in order to ensure a beautiful and productive learning environment
  • Assured safety during inclement weather to include shoveling, salting, providing slip protection on wet floors, securing against wind damage, and snow removal from roofs
  • Applied cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures
  • Adhered to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment
  • Performed minor repair and maintenance as authorized by district maintenance staff
  • Removed extraneous dirt and markings from interior and exterior surfaces (walls, doors, etc.).
  • Maintained HVAC systems by changing belts and making adjustments as needed

  • Utilized insecticides to prevent infestation by dangerous pests
  • Performed maintenance and minor repairs (replacing broken switches, fixing door handles, minor leaks etc.)
  • Reported major damages and oversaw repairs
  • Secured facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows and setting up the alarm
  • Undertook occasional custodial and janitorial tasks such as shoveling snow from the sidewalk, lifting heavy items, and moving chairs 
  • Set up and cleaned the cafeteria for lunch service

Janitors do not require any formal education, although some employers may prefer that you have a high school diploma or GED. Furthermore, if you’re interested in doing repairs or mechanic work, courses or experience in these areas can prove useful. 

Requirements vary by state but generally involve the following:

  • Complete a background check
